Toe-Tapping Tunes at The Olive Tree Market this Saturday!

The Olive Tree Market wouldn't be complete without toe-tapping tunes to entertain you as you stroll the grounds of Civic Park. Here’s the line-up for our special Mother’s Day market.

Abbi Yeo
9:00am – 10:30
@abbiyeoofficial is a singer/songwriter from the Central Coast, now living in Newcastle. She started writing at age 11, and now 20, she hasn't lost that passion. Abbi released her EP - Perfect Silence in 2021, with her track Wildfire winning Newcastle Music Show's, Steel City 50.

Cormac Grant
10:45am – 12:15pm
A Newcastle-based singer-songwriter with an obsession for the soul of music, @cormacgrant will charm you with his intimate songwriting and silky grooves. He is influenced by late 60s soul and Americana and is working on his upcoming EP release.

Louis Abell
12:30pm – 2:00pm
Louis Abell is a Newcastle musician and producer that has a diverse repertoire of musical tastes. His favourite artists span from Badbadnotgood and Bon Iver, to Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. Equipped with his Fender Jazzmaster named ‘Sonny’, he is sure to entertain the crowd with a diverse set list and unique equipment.

Today, we’re chatting with the lovely ladies from @pebble_jewellery_ another of our vibrant Olive Tree Market stallholders.

1. We love seeing your gorgeous self at the market. What is it that draws you back to the Olive Tree Market?
We like it! The atmosphere and quality draws our customers. The well-presented image and aesthetics of The Olive Tree Market really complements our business identity. The hard work and support of the management team make us feel valued and supported.

2. As someone who works in the creative space community, how important is it to have space for local creatives to show their wares?
Working in the creative space can often be challenging, so having a dedicated space to launch, grow, flourish and be supported has been essential for us, as it is for many others also. It gives people a chance to try something different or give their creative pursuits a go in a live and interactive marketplace with minimal up-front risk. The support for creative endeavours from places like The Olive Tree Market is often the tipping point of people’s dreams seeing daylight. Without these spaces we would miss so many opportunities as artists and makers to grow our passions and serve our community.

3. As a mother that works with your daughter, how has working the markets together changed your views on your business?
It hasn't so much changed our view on our business direction, it's more like it has given us a business direction. When we started, we didn't know what we were doing, or if we would even make a sale. Sandy was just 14 and I had been out of the workforce for 16 years as a stay-at-home mum. So, to say we were out of our comfort zone would be an understatement. However over time we have gained skills in talking to and engaging our customers and understanding the intricacies of managing a business, albeit on a modest scale and part-time basis. Most importantly we have gained confidence in ourselves and our product and the knowledge that, when we are ready, we can take this from a side hobby/hustle to a full-time gig.

As we gear up for the special Mother's Day Olive Tree Market on May 4, we're thrilled to bring you an interview with one of our beloved stall holders @mop_and_dolly.

1. We love seeing your gorgeous self at the market. What is it that draws you back to the Olive Tree Market?
The people! Olive Tree Market has such a loyal following, we love catching up with all of our regular customers and meeting new ones too!

2. Do you have any favourite fellow stallholders you love to see at The Olive Tree Markets with you?
We do! Some of our favourites are @honeybeehouseskinco, @fabricofsociety_official, @megwoodhead and @dunespottery.

3. As someone who works in the creative space community, how important is it to have space for local creatives to show their wares?
Having a platform like Olive Tree Market where we can come together with like-minded people, showcase our wares, connect with customers and have the opportunity to make a living from something we love doing is invaluable!

4. What would you say sparks your creativity?
I’m forever searching for new fabrics, wools and trims! I can’t wait to cut into them and make them into something gorgeous!

5. What is something you are reading/ watching/ listening to right now that you’re loving?
I have something playing in the background in my studio most of the time, whether it’s music, a podcast, or a movie…I listen on and off while I’m working away…right now I have Love Child playing, it’s a favourite of mine and Tills!

6. Finally, what is a piece of advice you would give to stallholders working with family?
It can be the most rewarding thing and a good excuse to spend more time together…. all of our three girls have grown up working at the markets either for me or for someone else. It’s great life experience for them and it’s lovely having them with me while I work.
