We’re thrilled to be teaming up with the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation for our October 5th Markets in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! This incredible foundation helps individuals and families navigate their journey with breast cancer with a wide range of services, all funded by you – the local community. This Month, we’re sitting down with Josh Lawlor of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation to get a better idea of how we can all show our support.

How long have you been with HBCF and what is it that you love about your role?

I’ve been with the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation for 12 months now, and what I love most about my role is getting to see the direct impact we make on local families navigating breast cancer. There are many incredible charities out there focused on finding a cure, and we wholeheartedly support that – our goal is to see a day when they put us out of a job! But until that time comes, HBCF is here for the now – providing immediate, practical support to local people during one of the most challenging times of their lives. Whether it’s offering transport to treatment, helping with household chores, or running fundraising initiatives, knowing that we can make a real difference today is what drives me.

What type of support does HBCF provide in the way of care services?

HBCF provides a wide range of practical support services to individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment. These services include transport to and from medical appointments, house cleaning, lawn maintenance, our mobile wig and headwear library, scholarships for families with school-aged children, and an online wellness hub. We also provide comfort cushions for post-surgery recovery and offer other supportive care to ease the challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis.

So how can you support outside of Market Day?

There are many ways to support HBCF outside of market day! You can get involved by hosting your own fundraising event or making a donation. We also welcome businesses and individuals to join us through corporate sponsorship or by offering in-kind donations. Another great way to support is by spreading the word with friends & family or on social media, you could volunteer at our events or purchase some HBCF merch.

Anything else we should remember as we approach Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

As we approach Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Josh stresses the importance to remember that every effort counts—whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness. One of the most crucial ways to make an impact is by being vigilant with your own health. We encourage everyone to check for lumps monthly and book in for regular screenings. With 1 in 7 women expected to face a breast cancer diagnosis, early detection can greatly improve the chances of beating this disease. This October let’s remind ourselves and our loved ones to take action, because together, we can make a real difference!

Alongside the HBCF community stall, our markets will be jam packed with incredible artists, creators, visionaries and of course, all your favourite food spots! Come along and show your support to HBCF on October 5th from 9am-2pm!
